Gems Math8 Exponents & Scientific Notation
EXPONENTS
Welcome to the fine World of Exponents! First you will do this Exponents Discovery Packet. Be sure to watch videos #1 & 2 so that you are on the right track! These videos will guide you to completing the discovery in an effective way and to get those most learning out of this activity. Then bring to me to check this off your list :-) Happy Math-ing!
Now it's time for official notes about exponents and their rules...Please get the handouts from me as these are difficult to print and put together properly. If you do not have access to these, you may make a mini booklet and write the notes in there. Be sure to write ALL the problems down, as well as ALL the steps to the notes. And be sure to listen to the words I say...just writing down what you see on the screen is not good enough, you've got to HEAR what I am saying as well! (STILL NEED T LINK THESE TWO)
I understand what an exponent is.
I understand zero and negative exponents.
The extra practice online is challenging, but is really good at making you think about exponents. Play one round, then see if you can beat your time! Good luck!

I can multiply exponents that have the same bases.
I can raise a power to a power.
I can raise a power to a power.
I can divide exponents that have the same bases.
I can combine all the operations together into the Level 3, Super Difficult, Problems! I am a MASTER!
I can simplify exponents of all operations mixed together at Levels 1 & 2 (easy & medium difficulty)
SCIENTIFIC & STANDARD NOTATION
The buttons directly below are super cool images zoomed in to such a small area that numbers are WAY closer to zero. How would you write numbers this incredibly small so that to measure these super tiny things? Check out the images for fun!
Powers of 10 Activity
I understand how to write really, really big numbers and super, super small numbers in Scientific & Standard Notation.
I can differentiate numbers that are written in correct Scientific Notation from ones that are not written correctly. Cut out the number expressions and place in the correct column: ones that are written correctly go into the "Proper Scientific Notation" column. Ones that are not written properly are place in/near the trash can image.
I can add and subtract numbers in Scientific Notation. Write all your answers for the HW2 in Scientific Notation.
I can multiply and divide numbers in Scientific Notation
I can add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers in Scientific Notation. I can apply this skill to real life. I can solve real world problems involving scientific notation.

Welcome back from fall break! Today, we either shared about our break or checked out some Would You Rather cards in a small group and learned the structure, Fan and Pick, which may be used in learning with mathematics in the near future! The we played the game "Greedy Hippo". This is a really fun way to introduce a little bit about probability before we get back to the numbers grind from before break :-) At the end of the period, some of the classes started listing out all the different combinations of getting the numbers 1 - 12 from rolling two die. Then tomorrow, we will discuss just a bit about probability. If you missed class, please click on the link below to get the game documents and play this with your family! Then next link is to an online die roller.
